Fertility Foods For Women: Grains & Nuts

Ladies! Stop sabotaging your chances of getting pregnant! Eat the fertility foods for women that can help you conceive.

Wholesome Whole Grains

If you are trying to conceive, you should pack your diet with as many nutrient-rich foods as possible … and whole grains are a great place to start.

Whole grains – such as pasta, brown rice, whole wheat bread, cereal and oats – give you energy and are full of vitamins B and E. These are essential vitamins for cellular reproduction, production of healthy eggs and sperm, and hormone balance.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, you should eat about 6 ounces of whole grains a day. That’s roughly the equivalent of a bowl of cereal for breakfast, a couple of slices of whole wheat sandwich bread at lunch, and a serving of whole wheat pasta for dinner.

Go Nuts!

Foods like nuts, legumes, seeds and tofu offer natural plant protein – healthy fats relatively low in calories. They can be a great aid if you need to shape up and lose a few pounds to improve your Body Mass Index (BMI). Our old fertility friends vitamin B6 and folic acid also turn up again in nuts and whole grains.

Healthy legumes include chickpeas, lentils, peas, black beans and baked beans. In addition, Brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds are both high in zinc which, together with selenium, greatly enhance testosterone levels and sperm production. Selenium also helps reduce the chances of miscarriage in women and can also be found in garlic.

Omega-3 – most commonly found in fish oil – may have beneficial qualities for fertility as it linked to healthy hormone function. If you’re a vegetarian, an omega-3-rich alternative is avocado.

If you don’t fancy fish, fish oils OR avocado, flaxseeds are the richest plant-based source of omega-3 fatty acids. Buy flaxseeds in health food stores. Grind them in a coffee grinder and sprinkle them on cereal or toast, or add them to a smoothie. You can also buy flaxseed oil. Drizzle a tablespoon a day over salad, popcorn, or a baked potato.

Just a wee warning about flaxseed oil for the man in your life. Some studies suggest it can cause prostate problems. A simple solution is for men to substitute flaxseed oil for whole flaxseeds. This can result in significantly reduced growth rate of cancer cells AND accelerate the death rate of cancer cells.
